Once the Minnesota Vikings received news that their franchise quarterback Kirk Cousins was expected to miss the rest of the season to nurse a torn Achilles that requires surgery, they acquired quarterback Josh Dobbs from the Arizona Cardinals in exchange for a swap of late-round draft picks.

Less than a week after the trade became official, Dobbs was thrust into action in Week 9 when rookie quarterback Jaren Hall (who started the game in Cousins’ place) was removed from the game and ultimately ruled out due to a concussion. Not only did Dobbs fill in admirably, he was exceptional en route to leading the Vikings to an impressive 31-28 victory over the Atlanta Falcons.

After the game, Dobbs was about his grasp (or lack thereof) of the team’s playbook and whether or not he anticipated playing in such a short turnaround after being traded less than a week ago.

“Anything that was installed this week, I knew, Dobbs told NBC Sports’ ProFootballTalk after the win. Dobbs went on to mention that he told Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell that he “has a pretty good grasp” of anything on the call sheet.

Dobbs completed 20 of his 30 pass attempts for 158 yards and two touchdowns, adding seven carries for 66 yards and a touchdown through the ground as well. The Vikings improved to 5-4 following this game and Dobbs has certainly earned an opportunity to follow up this remarkable performance, but one can only wonder how differently the game may have ended if Hall never got injured.

“I was only playing if something happened to Jaren,” Dobbs stated. Hopefully, Hall gets well and back on the field as soon as possible, but this may be Dobbs’ job to lose by then.
