Adult soccer playoffs underway, youth playoffs postponed

The first round of the Adult Soccer League playoffs was held on November 2 at the Anna Maria Island Center and featured four games.

Gulf View Windows & Doors, the No. 5 seed, began the tournament against Sato Real Estate, the No. 4 seed. Gulf View won 4-2 thanks to a hat trick from Jesús Martínez and a goal and assist from Leo González. Amber Augustine had an assist and Raul Loera made nine saves to help preserve the win.

Amy Evan and James Noblet each scored a goal for Sato, and Ben Sato contributed nine saves.

In the second game of the night, third-seeded Ross Bildt took on the No. 6 Billiards team in regulation time and the teams went to penalty kicks after a 1-1 tie. Daniel Hampton and Andrew Ross hit penalties, with Ross Bildt winning the penalty shootout 2-1, while Nate Welch was the only US billiard player to hit a penalty.

In the third game of the night, second-ranked Gulf Drive Cafe defeated No. 7 Sandbar Restaurant, 4-3, on the strength of three goals from Kevin Roman and one from Helio Gomez. Javier Rivera dished out an assist and Tuna McCracken contributed nine saves to help secure the win.

John Cruz, Justin Fields and Alex Villanueva each scored a goal for Sundance, Matthew Staggs contributed two assists, and Rob Marshall contributed an assist and 8 saves.

In the final game of the night, No. 8 Slim's Place knocked off No. 1 Moss Builders in another penalty kick shootout.Dean Hinterstoessel and Gallardo Urbiola Bolanos took the penalty kicks, but the the next three players failed to put the penalty away.

Damir Glavan, Kris Yavalar and Thomas Mangotic each scored penalties to help Slumberland Square win 4-3 on penalties.

The semifinals will continue on Nov. 9, with Slim's Place taking on Gulf View at 7 p.m., followed by Gulf Drive Cafe at 8 p.m. against Ross Building.

Royal Key Golf

Golf began Oct. 30 at the Royal Key Club in Holmes Beach with the Men's Modified Stafford System.Brian Comer and Nelson Eagle tied for first place with +5 scores. Tim Friessen, Bob Leedham and Blake Ress all earned points and tied for second.

On Halloween, the women's team competed in two nine-hole individual low net tournaments. Marcia Friessen birdied the fifth hole and shot a 2-under par 30 to finish first in the A Division. Helen Pollock was one shot back in second, while Linda Dorsey and Margrit Layh tied for third at even-par 32.

Pam Alvord shot a 1-under-par 31 to finish first in the B Division by one stroke. Jana Samuels and Sue Wheeler tied for second at even par 32, with Marty Clark two strokes back in third.

Members returned to the course on Nov. 2 for a chaotic nine-hole scramble that resulted in a 38-under-par score. The team of Leigh Brattain, Dom Livedoti, Mike Riddick, and Bill S human won clubhouse honors at 2-under par. 36.

Horseshoe News.

Two teams finished 3-0 in the November 1 horseshoe tournament at the Anna Maria Town Hall Pit. In the morning, Bob Hawks and Bob Baker defeated Tom Skoloda and Bob Lee 21-9.

The two teams also advanced to the Nov. 4 team tournament, then the pitchers decided the winner in the elimination game. Bob Rowley earned the day's individual honors with a 24-12 win over Tom Farrington and Gary Howcroft.

Matches begin at 9 a.m. on Wednesday and Saturday at Anna Maria Field. Warm-ups begin at 8:45 a.m., followed by random team selection.
